Here’s your step-by-step tax preparation guide
The following is a list of the necessary steps to have KB Financial Planning prepare your tax returns. Included are important dates to keep in mind and other considerations for the 2023 tax season and beyond. Note that turnaround times for tax return preparation vary throughout the year and waiting until the last minute is highly discouraged. Accuracy is our first priority, therefore rushing to complete your return is not on our list of to-dos.
Your return is guaranteed to be filed before the tax deadlines shown below if we’ve received all of your information prior to April 1, 2023 (or 15 days prior to your entity deadline). After this date, understand that we may need to file an extension in order to avoid late filing fees. You’ll be updated with email and message alerts along the way so you always know exactly where you’re at in the preparation and filing process.

Filing deadlines
In order for KB Financial Planning to complete your returns in the most efficient manner, please follow the steps as outlined below. If at any time you have concerns, questions or feedback to provide, you can contact us via your secure portal, at kaylyn@kbfinancialplanning.com or at (541) 714-3354. During peak tax season, email or secure message are the preferred contact options.
New clients, schedule an initial consultation so we can determine if we’re a good fit for one another. This meeting allows you time to ask questions about my process and helps set expectations. If we’ve already met or you are a prior client, feel free to skip directly to step 2 or 3 as applicable.
The secure portal is where you’ll upload documents, electronically sign documents, send and receive messages, and book appointments. Set-up is simple but if you need help, read this next: What is the secure portal and how do I use it?
**If you are married and file jointly, both spouses must sign up for their own accounts in order to comply with IRS requirements.
3. Review and sign the client engagement letter
This will be sent to you via email upon portal sign-up. For prior clients, you will be notified by email that it is available and ready for signing in mid January. This letter must be signed prior to us working together and verifies that you understand and agree to the terms of our engagement. If you prefer to sign and return a printable version, download a copy here.
4. Review and complete the tax organizer
Access to this will be available to you within your portal. It is a comprehensive electronic document that’s used to ensure that all items of tax relevance are accounted for and that our compliance records are complete. It’s critical that this be completed fully since your return can only be as accurate as the information you provide.
If you prefer to mail copies of your documents rather than uploading them, please indicate that within your portal. Please do not send originals. Use the following mailing address; you will be notified when your documents are received.
KB Financial Planning
Attn: Kaylyn Bugay
1313 Thompson Cir, P.O. Box 692
Dupont, WA 98327
**New clients must also provide a copy of their previous year Federal and state tax returns in addition to all standard tax documents.
The tax preparation appointment verifies that you’re ready to proceed with paid tax preparation. This meeting gives us the opportunity to discuss any unique filing needs, specific tax concerns, and any questions you have. You’ll be given a fee estimate based on the information and documentation that’s been provided. A list of current fees is available here, midway down the page.
Please have all of your documents submitted no less than 48 hours prior to your appointment. This allows me time to review your documents, complete preliminary data entry and notify you of any outstanding items still needed. I cannot provide an accurate estimate without a full picture of your tax situation. If you’re uncertain about what needs to be submitted, please review the tax organizer you were provided or contact me with questions.
6. Review and pay your deposit
You’ll be sent an invoice for 50% of your agreed upon fee. After payment is made, you’ll be guided through the remaining steps until your tax returns are completed, reviewed and filed. You are always welcome at any time to reach out with questions, for clarification, or for any reason.
**Like your time, my time is also valuable. Under no circumstances will services be rendered without a 50% retainer fee. This helps reduce no-shows and eliminate price shoppers. We appreciate your understanding.
